How to measure your feet for shoes that actually fit.

Shoe sizes vary wildly between brands, but your foot’s length and width don’t. Measure once with a wall, a ruler, and a piece of paper, and you’ll never squint at a brand’s size chart again.

1. Foot length: the wall method

  1. Place a piece of paper on a hard floor with its short edge touching a wall.
  2. Stand on the paper with your heel firmly against the wall, weight evenly on both feet.
  3. Mark the tip of your longest toe on the paper (it isn’t always the big toe).
  4. Step off and measure from the paper’s edge to your mark with a ruler.

Tip: Measure both feet and use the longer one, since most people’s feet differ slightly. And measure at the end of the day, when your feet are at their largest.

2. Foot width: at the ball

Stand on a piece of paper and trace your foot. Measure across the widest part, the ball of your foot. Most people measure between 3 and 4.5 inches.

Tip: Measure both feet and use the wider one. Foot width is what determines whether you need a narrow, standard, or wide shoe — a detail most size charts ignore entirely.

3. Calf circumference (for boots)

Wrap the tape around the widest part of your calf, keeping it parallel to the floor. This measurement is needed for knee-high and over-the-knee boots.

Tip: Measure while standing with your weight evenly distributed on both legs.

Why this beats “I’m usually a 9”

A US 9 in one brand can be a full half-size different in another, and width fits are rarely comparable at all. Your actual foot measurements are the one constant — which is exactly what Attirel uses to recommend the right size (and width) in every brand you shop.

Feet measured? The rest is automatic.

Add your foot length and width to Attirel and get the right shoe size in every brand, including width fit.
